HARDANGERVIDDA CROSSING: LOGISTICS AND ESSENTIALS

Transport 🚗

We flew from Amsterdam to Oslo, and from there took the train from Oslo S to Finse. Since we’re under 26, we qualified for SAS youth discounts.
Pro tip: With SAS Airlines, a ski bag can weigh up to 23 kg. Buy an extra-large ski bag and—aside from your skis—fill it up with as much gear as possible until you hit that limit. This saves you the hassle of checking an additional bag! To protect your skis, wrap them in your foam sleeping pad.

For the pulk, pack the rest of your gear in it and wrap it thoroughly with foil and a generous amount of tape. As soon as we had arrived on the airport, we removed the tape, in order to make carrying a lot easier.

SAFETY

Before starting the trip we visited the DNT store in Oslo to get some fuel and some up-2-date information with regards to the weather. However, according to the shop clerks, we’d be the first ones this season to attempt a crossing, so little was known besides the weather forecast. Even though we had absolute perfect conditions this time, always prepare yourself well and bring a satellite phone with an active membership!

DNT CABINS

Out of the 7 days on the plateau, we spent one day in a self-service DNT hut. This was the first time that we used a self-service DNT cabin in winter, pretty brilliant! Takes a little while to warm up, but with a little effort you’ll quickly get yourself a nice fire. It almost makes you forget that you are in the middle of nowhere in a cabin, without running water. Don’t forget though, to get a DNT membership in order to get yourself a key, and check the website upfront to make sure it is opened & accessible!

Foods

To start off with the dinner, in our humble opinion, nothing beats the 1000kcal versions of expeditions foods! It’s delicious and with some meals containing 50grams of protein, we can’t complain about the macro’s either! For lunch we use a random selection of (chocolate/protein) bars, fruitkeks (dutch cookies) and a trail mix. Pro tip: put your trail mix in a Nalgene bottle, this allows for eating with the mittens still on. Our breakfast recipe and more information about our food can be found here.
